Holidays in San Diego are magical: you can escape the dreary weather and the cold and bask in the San Diego Southern California sunshine. San Diego has so many activities and holiday events going on in the month of December, and we thought we would give you a glimpse of some of the many things to do!
Holiday Events in San Diego
La Mesa’s Christmas in the Village
In December, the Village is transformed into a gorgeous, Victorian Wonderland, complete with carolers, a visit from Santa, a huge Christmas tree and snow!
Dates: December 9-10.
Dr. Suess’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas
It is a wonderful treat to combine a walk about historic Balboa Park with “Whoville” decorations just outside the Old Globe Theatre. The theatre will have its annual holiday production, and the Grinch will be grinning from ear to ear… eventually!
Dates: through December 24th.
Poway’s Christmas in the Park
Poway’s Christmas in the Park is all things Christmas, with Santa, train rides, live music, food, crafts, theater performances and a tree lighting ceremony.
Date: December 9
Oceanside Harbor Parade of Lights
The Oceanside Harbor Parade of Lights will light up your holiday season! The boat parade features a wide variety of boats that are adorned with lights for the season, and circles the harbor.
Date: December 9.
Gaslamp Holiday Pet Parade
The Gaslamp Holiday Pet Parade is such a fun event! We love the historic Gaslamp Quarter, and this is the time for pets and their owners to strut their stuff! After marching down the decorated streets of the Gaslamp neighborhood, the parade ends at a Pet Expo that features an award ceremony for best dressed fur babies.
Date: December 10.
Port of San Diego Bay Parade of Lights
The waters of San Diego Bay will be glistening with the lights of more than 100 boats decorated for the season at the annual Port of San Diego Bay Parade of Lights. It is a spectacular sight, and it is spread out over two weekends. There are a number of good spots from which to view the parade, including Shelter Island, Harbor Island, the Embarcadero, Seaport Village, Marina Park and Coronado’s Ferry Landing.
Dates: December 10 & 17.
Port of San Diego Holiday Bowl Parade
You may not know this, but San Diego hosts the country’s largest balloon parade. The Holiday Bowl Parade features floats, balloons and marching bands to usher in the new year.
Date: December 28.
Hotel del Coronado
If you are newer to the San Diego area, and have never been over to the Hotel del Coronado, you need to make it a priority. The historic, spacious grand hotel is gorgeous throughout the year, but they really shine during the holiday season. Just cross the Coronado Bay Bridge and marvel at the beautiful hotel that is illuminated for the season. The tree in the hotel lobby is always a show-stopper.
Dates: all during December
The shores and cliffs of Point Loma are the perfect spot to watch California gray whales from December through March. These majestic mammals are passing through the waters off San Diego’s coastline, and a view of them will snatch your breath away.
